The Cardiff Triathlon will have a new Legend middle-distance race when the event makes its return to the calendar in 2022.

As with so many other triathlon events, the showpiece has been shelved in 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Organisers though believe it will return stronger than ever next year, with a new distance to offer to age-groupers from around the world.

The 2022 event is scheduled for June 25 and 26, with the Welsh capital offering a technical and fast city-based race on closed roads. More than 1500 triathletes from across the globe took part in 2019, and even more are expected next time round.

The new Legend middle-distance route will start like all the other distances, with a 1.9k swim in Cardiff Bay. Participants will then head into transition set out in the Roald Dahl Plass, a stunning amphitheatre overlooked by the impressive Wales Millennium centre.

The bike leg will lead competitors out on a 56 mile (90k) flat fast bike route, first onto a part lap of the closed-road section before leading out onto open roads heading east through Cardiff’s industrial heritage and then on to the beautiful Wentlooge flatlands before entering into neighbouring district of Newport.

The race will end with a 13.1 miles (21.1K) run, on a lapped route in Cardiff Bay, with a great opportunity to catch all the sights along the way and set a fast pace. Culminating in a sprint finish; along Bute Place, around the corner where they cross the finish line under the shadow of the world-famous Wales Millennium Centre in front of thousands of spectators and supporters.
