Tonight is the night (Wednesday March 19) for one of the most anticipated triathlon-related documentaries to air as the BBC will showcase the story of former motorsport star Billy Monger on BBC One at 21:00 GMT.

The 25-year-old set an incredible new IRONMAN World Championship record in Kona last October by becoming the fastest double leg amputee to complete the Hawaii course in a time of 14:23:36, taking more than two hours off the previous best.

The story of his inspirational performance will air on terrestrial TV in the UK this evening, in the form of a documentary for Comic Relief – the annual charity spectacular for which Billy is a major fund raiser.

An incredible human being

Billy Monger: The Race Is On For Comic Relief documents his journey from “never having run a marathon” to taking on one of the biggest endurance feats in the world of sport.

Comic Relief previewed the documentary on their social media channels, with a stunning montage of his training, comments from his friends and family and his emotions in the build-up to last October’s race.

The former racing driver suffered a near fatal crash in April 2017 during an incident at Donington, leading to the amputation of both his legs. Now a commentator and presenter for Channel 4, Monger has taken on some amazing challenges, raising more than £3million for Comic Releif.

In March 2021, he completed ‘Billy’s Big Challenge’ covering a distance of 140 miles by walking, kayaking and cycling, and three years later he tested himself once again, this time on the Big Island as he set a new world record.

Billy’s documentary is set to air tonight at 21:00 GMT on BBC One (Except on Scotland HD and Wales), with Comic Relief scheduled for Friday March 21.
