“Are you waiting for me? I thought so!”

Those were the words of Australian pro cycling star Cam Wurf as he entered transition following the 90km bike leg where an official was on hand to inform the 41-year-old that he was disqualified from IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside for speeding.

Wurf joined an illustrious lists of stars who had previously fallen foul of the rules at Oceanside – including former F1 world champion Jenson Button and Swiss triathlon legend Daniela Ryf. A section of the California-based course has strict speed limits enforced on it due to safety concerns.

Wurf had exited the water a minute off the pace of leader Greg Harper, and set about using his favoured discipline to make inroads on the field. However, the Australian was caught out by the speed trap, diminishing any hope of a successful outing.

“I was expecting the real steep climb before it and it caught me by surprise, but it was actually the steep one, then the easy one, then the descent and I was like s**t….” he told an IRONMAN media official in T2.

The four-time IRONMAN race winner, however, looked on the bright side following the news and admitted that he was “already out of the race” anyway and he could use the ensuing run as “training” for his next event, IRONMAN Texas on Saturday April 26.

Cam is on to Texas

“Well, my handlebars came loose, and then I guess I just wasn’t concentrating where the descent was and went too fast, so it sounds like I’ve been disqualified.

I mean, already I was out of the race, so it’s just a training day again, unfortunately, but now I’m definitely out of the race but will still run and get a good training session in.

“Let’s focus on Texas, that’s only three weeks away, so all good, onwards. Can’t dwell on the past, focus on the future.”
